The blurb was enticing and the beginning was promising. I was in for the ride. However, things started to fizzle out midway through, as the plot took an unfortunate turn. I pretty much tuned out then and started skimming a little.

I am very excited to begin reading this book. I love the John Corey series!

This is a brick of a book, and oh-so-very-slow. Not sure I’ll get through it. My loan expired so I’ll have to see if I can get it again.

I started this novel earlier today and have managed to read half. I’m now forcing myself to put it down so I can sleep but it’s hard. I hope the second half is as good!

Never a good sign when I only read a few pages per day. Not nearly as good as the first two books in the trilogy.

Very slow so far...

Read almost 25%. When does it get interesting? It’s s-l-o-w.

Once Upon a River is largely told as a tale, right from the very first words, « Once upon a time. » Diane Setterfield takes the reader on a gothic, lyrical, magical journey. Such atmospheric, mysterious storytelling creates high expectations, but Setterfield delivers. The writing is beautiful and the storytelling is masterful.

I love this series and look forward to the next novel but I didn’t really enjoy the plot in this one.
