Malachi sucks it

I took a little bit to settle in to the book/figure out what was going on. Now that the dust is settling, I’m finding it remarkably Boring.

I am stunned by the range of feelings that Stout consistently draws from my cold, dead heart.

So fucking dry. I know he’s going to meet his end soon. This is purgatory.

I hate this book

“Neurotic teen writes smut for neurotics” is how I would tagline this book. I hope the next 260 pages draw me in more, but I’m apprehensive that this book is actually just a better prose Fifty Shades of Grey for bisexual dudes.

1) that the narrator had a kid at age 69 is beyond egocentric and bizarre.

2) when he dies, his widow is DEFO gonna bang Jack Boughton.

I didn’t think we could go more boring and Biblical, but here we are. Respect thy parents? Really?

“My dad and my eccentric-ass grandfather disagreed a bunch. Let me say this over and over for hundreds of pages.”

This is fine listening but I remain perplexed at the Pulitzer element

The noses. The observing spring breakers. Our girl is judgmental, but in such an old-fashioned way ! Maybe it’s just a sign of the times back when this was published

To hell with the MIL, love that they went no contact!

And also why tf would Audrey leave kids in the car, at her work, so easy for others to find. Or is …pure coincidence that they came that day. Ugh.

Why in the FECK would they be able to get your buses up in the storm, but not police support, in light of multiple murder by a seemingly already-notorious killer?

The prose mostly works but some of the conversations are sloppy and incoherent, and there is definitely more than one plot hole.

Pros:
-at times, her prose shines. (She’s going for sumptuous as hell, but it often feels like spiderwebs of unnecessary, circling diction.)
-her creation of setting is thorough.

Cons:
-storyline SO. DULL. and often hard to buy in/clunky and clumsy with characterization.
-main character is flat, unlikable—maybe she’s going for unreliable, & it’s not just clumsiness? I just want the guy to die by the end.

What can I say, this book sucks.
