My son and I are reading this together. It is quite gripping thus far. The author is a master at cliffhanger chapter endings.

This is my current audiobook. And i just have to share that I LOVE Sir Derek Jacobi as narrator... I keep remembering his guest appearance on Frasier.. "I die Horatio!!" 😂

A whodunnit set near Nelson, British Columbia in 1946 with a young English she-sleuth, written by a former Vancouver educator and principal... How have I not read this by now?

Slow build

Gets a little repetitive...

Started out very solidly. The first middle has had many lovely moments where shunned children are encouraged to express themselves...but also some areas where it feels dialogue heavy ... A few too many philosophical discussions about Kant. I can see why this might be recommended to teachers in particular. Am thinking this novel is in fact more philosophy than fantasy.

My current audiobook on tap. I usually prefer text. Listening, I find my mind wanders too much, unless I'm in a dark room laying down. But I am working on building up my audiobook skills on lighter fair, like this amusing late Victorian mystery. This is the first of the Veronica Speedwell series. She's a very uncommon lady of her times - confident, educated, independent, scientific, sexually liberated, unapologetic.

I'm really happy I read this. Will definitely move on to the next in the series. Thank you for the rec, Claire.

Decided to keep track of my cookbook reading here as they are now one of my favorite kinds of books and I spend much time with them.

Just started this last night as bedtime reading with my son.

started out a bit slow... but now he's found the cave... things are starting to move.

So much wisdom and beauty in this. I am taking it slowly, picking it up when I am seeking meditation/growth/inner quiet and ease... and I think this is how this title SHOULD be read.

Bedtime read with my son. Very cute. Good for his age group. Kept his interest. After going to the Sistine Chapel art exhibit, he enjoyed the references to Michelangelo and the Renaissance.

I have to admit. I'm not enjoying this so far. I picked this up, because I love magical realism and I wanted a taste of all the masters. I wanted context. I see what's going on here. I get the cleverness of it. The absurdity, the laughing at ourselves tongue in cheek, scholar to scholar, raised eyebrow that is being offered me. I'm just not intrigued enough to want to wink back. But I will go along... With effort.
