I just cannot with these two, anymore. I feel like I need to pause until I can just binge the rest of it, because the angst and the drama is intense.

In all honesty, I was worried I'd be disappointed by this book, and so far, I am. The writing is basic and repetitive, and boring me out of my mind. I'm no stranger to first book syndrome, but this one is screaming dnf. I can see that there might be potential in the world building, but I just can't. The repetition in the phrases is too much. I think I just talked myself into a dnf.

The character work in these books is unparalleled. That is all. 10/10 if you aren't listening to these, you are doing yourself a disservice.

So far I don't get the hype. It's fine. But it doesn't stand out as especially captivating or excellently written. Which is a bit of a bummer considering I absolutely devoured both Riftborne and Duskbound. Still holding out hope that something happens to make it all worth it.

I'm genuinely considering not finishing until a reread next year right before book 3 comes out. I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to handle whatever cliffhanger they leave us on. I'm terrified to finish 😩

Almost 200 pages in and I have yet to understand why this book is raved about. The plot is not moving forward at all. Despite having numerous named characters, there has been zero development of any of those characters. Our fmc has not shown any resilience, growth, or even common sense yet. The best I can hope for right now is that she is an unreliable narrator, and I hate that type of prose! But not giving up yet.

I don't know what to make of this so far. I loved that it started like we were in the middle of a story. No slow world building. However, now almost halfway thru and I still don't really know anything. It doesn't help that I know there is a major twist at the end, because that's all anybody said about this book. So naturally I think I know what the twist is going to be and I'm just waiting for it to happen.

It makes me really sad, because this was a series I was looking forward to, but I am going to dnf. Granted, a soft dnf at this point. But I am not enjoying these enough for how long each book is. As somebody who loves urban fantasy, this isn't it. Perhaps I'll check back in with it when I'm in my next reading slump. So yeah, soft dnf.

This is incredibly dark, but there are times of honesty and tenderness that really show what a traumatic upbringing can do to a person. Half of the time I don't know why I'm still listening to it, and the other half I think, "ahh, that's why." 💯 check TW's in depth before reading. I kinda wish I had, but here we are.

I had no idea this book was going to be so much fun. I had trouble getting interested when I first picked it up, so I switched to the audio, and I am SO glad I did. It's very immersive and I feel like I'm on the adventure with the crew.

I like the premise. My interest was piqued from the beginning. But I cannot with the third person pov snippets. The "chapters" are only a few pages each of what feels like incomplete thoughts. I'm sure this style is meant to bring mystery and intrigue, but it's doing quite the opposite for me. I'm having a hard time caring what might happen, if anything.

It was definitely a slow start, but I swear this book is a balm for the soul. It acknowledges your insecurities and makes them okay. And if you don't suffer from such insecurity, perhaps it will enlighten you as to how others are always feeling. I am already looking forward to a reread to tab so many important quotes and ideas, and I'm not even finished with the first read yet.
