Big step up from the previous book for this class. The writing is stupendous and engaging.

Reading this for PSYC 3000: The Science of Happiness. Not off to an incredibly strong start. Some parts I whole-heartedly agree with like what we think will make us happy vs. what actually makes us happy. However, I don’t know if I fully agree with the downplaying of circumstance and environment. A lot of “if you aren’t happy, just choose to be happy”. A lot of othering/exclusion as far as depression as well.

“The sun was very low but not yet set and the last of it slanted through the rear window. I felt that even the sun belonged to my father, that I had no right to it because it was shining upon my father’s house. I was like his roses, something that belonged to him and not me…”

It’s certainly beginning to feel as though the meandering will intertwine after all.

I’m productively procrastinating. Reading this sometimes feels more mentally taxing than my cell and molecular neuroscience class.

Hard but so addicting.

“Polar bears seek toenail-holds up the freezing frosty-grape alveolar clusters in his lungs. It hurts his teeth too much to breathe, even through his nose, even necktie loosened, with his nose downsides the neck of his olive-drab T-shirt. Benzoin vapors see into his brain. His head floats in a halo of ice.”

Even reading just four pages of this book feels gratifying.
