I'm very early on and it's something of a dense read, but so far the vibe is, like, a rejection of the worst parts of classic sci-fi. It opens with two queer moms, balancing breastfeeding their child with the arrival of aliens. Then introduces their polycule, at least one of whom is trans I think? No bland white everyman to be found so far.

A slow start, but once it picks up its pace, it's a fascinating world. I love a (SMART) academic fantasy and this one is tossing the old cliches out the window to make room for Fun With Languages.
