#20:
- Foreign powers love taking sides in foreign civil wars. Great excuse to march their army into more territory without a fight, and then overstay their welcome.
- Federal law that enlists states to punish other states is the compromise between federal power and state power that nobody actually wants: it's only ever caused civil war (and foreign meddling, see above).

Ethics needs mathematics to be practiced. You need to be able measure how much good you can do and evil you'll need to avoid. Measurement is mathematical.

Raskolnikov hates the inside of his room just like he hates the inside of his own head.

Thoughts:
- Wondering whose pity party is bigger: Marmeladov or Raskolnikov's.
- The irony of the tavern scene is twofold: (1) The self-inflictedness of Marmeladov's suffering and (2) that other men in the tavern with him think they're somehow better than him.
- Does Marmeladov's addiction make him more or less human?
