Loved books 1-3!

But book 4? Venting + spoilers:

I’m livid Uhura got fridged! The ultra-powerful, badass black woman dies offscreen, gunned down by police for looking scary while saving a child’s life, just so emotionally immature Sam will finally step up? Wtf?!

& Sam’s response, grief-fueled self-destruction and cruelty to those who love them, was infuriating! Why is Angel’s sex work Sam’s go-to insult?

I signed up for the supernatural mystery and don’t enjoy non-magical stories of dissatisfied middle-class WASP suburbanites, so for me, the beginning of this audiobook, which establishes Patricia’s thankless status quo life and wider community, dragged. I nearly DNF’d several times. So glad I didn’t! Once the stranger came to town, tensions rose and mysterious happenings ensued. Cue reading binge mode… 😍

Chapter 14/106
I wish Audible had labeled the chapters with each novella’s title and author. Navigating a 106-chapter anthology with no indication of what any of those chapters contain is a huge pain.

I like that chapter 1 includes short blurbs for each of the anthology’s 8 novellas, but wish they’d included the author’s names; the authors are listed alphabetically, but their stories aren’t in that order.

Kaseka is starting St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves
I’m reading this for school as an example of artistic prose. The syntax is precise and exquisite, but this is definitely literary fiction, and beautiful language isn’t enough to hold my attention when so little of substance occurs. An alligator theme park and a camp for children with strange sleep disorders (ex. portentous visions of past disasters) are fascinating, but little was done with them.

I read the July issue about Bucky Barnes going John Wick when Hydra steals his stuff, and it was delightful.
