this story has my heart in my throat

i do like this series so far but i think it really is solidifying my absolute disdain for first person pov. you can easily share a character’s inner monologue without making it first person. i like reading ABOUT these characters, not swapping back & forth between their perspectives

some of these chapters have made me a bit uncomfy but all valuable info/history and sometimes you gotta sit with the uncomfy too

this book is so poignant; it’s making me physically sick to know how much this country is soaked in the blood of innocent people.

pausing this for now, didn’t realize it was primarily romantasy (more fantasy/greek myth retelling since some heavy flirting) and i’m just not in the mood for that rn

wow wasnt planning to start this now but i am HOOKED within the first 10 pages.

i will also say this: the two main characters are postgraduate students; a logistician and a linguistic. when Kuang narrates & name-drops philosophers, scholars, theories, paradoxes, etc, she’s citing her sources to the material being discussed in the story.

i get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s valid, but i personally don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing.

i can definitely see why people think this is a bit heavy-handed and pretentious (i mean that’s kinda the whole point), but i only have a vague understanding of most of the concepts they’re discussing and i’m still really enjoying it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it is probably the major nerd in me.

(i also hope this doesn’t come off as pretentious, i just like learning new things through fiction; sorry if it does!!!)

wait i actually love this so far lol

i am astounded that this is a memoir and i can already tell it will be one of my favorite reads of 2025. incredibly written.
