İstanbul'a ilk kez 27 mayıs devriminden sonra gelmiştim. Ertesi gün yapı ve şehircilik mühendisi olan kardeşim Enver beni Bayezit meydanına götürmüştü. Oranın ne hale geldiğini görünce ağlamaklı olmuştum. Enver, bana orayı dolaştırdıktan sonra şöyle demişti: "Bundan sonra İstanbul'a geldiğinde ilk önce buraya gel, meydana bak. Ne görürsen Türkiye'nin ne durumda olduğunu oradan anlarsın.."
