alright so im a bit pissed tbh. this book has done a couple dumb things that have really undercut the climax for me.

1. lied about Britain prohibiting opium use domestically, but encouraging use in China. this isn't true, british people used opium domestically, as it was totally legal. the plight of the Chinese people was already sympathetic enough, you didn't need to abruptly make up a fact for a sick "gotcha

omg this is so cool. it kinda of reminds me of harry potter, except this author seems a lot more responsible than JK Rowling. in the harry potter books, it was so easy to feel enchanted by hogwarts. im getting similar feelings with babel, except in this case, this feeling of awe is used as a tool to recruit people into serving the british colonial empire! ah it's so fucked up and cool.
