Okay now we are back to the story telling and pacing that I enjoy! I didn’t dislike the other 2/3 of the book. I thought that the story line was good, and I liked the deviation from what I expected. It’s clearly setting up something big. BUT it felt off because It didn’t have the same tone and pacing that I expect from a Hunter book, and was a more repetitive. But we’re so back!

Erike knows how to make one hell of a dramatic entrance and piss people off lol

I’m gonna hold Aemund’s head in a bucket of water and tell him to breathe deep. I hate this guy so muuuuuuuuuuch.

I had thought that Erike was going to be a weak man physically. He has shown that he doesn’t might making tough calls, he is a good commander and leader, but I never expected him to be the type to get his hands dirty. I was wrong. Erike could be about that life if he wanted to be.

I’m so torn. The concept of monsters from different dimensions being portalled into a fantasy world is up my alley. The horror elements, gore, magic, and clan wars are all to my liking. BUT THIS BATTLE HAS GONE ON FOR TOO DAMN LONG. All of the amazing things are buried under never ending action. Like literally, there is so much action.

Oh yeah this is such a fun and quick listen! The action is great. The food descriptions make me hungry. The story telling is smooth. The narrator is 10/10!

Chapter 4 thoughts: The resistance is just as cold as the oppressive empire ran by the Queen Mother, and I wonder if, like we see in the finale of hunger games, that they are both corrupt. One for their unrelenting need for power, the other for their need to eliminate the regime at any cost.

Also, it stood out to me that people have not seen the queen mother….

Not sure how I feel about this huge battle scene front loaded in the story. I don’t think the story is about the battle so much as the aftermath of the battle, so I will wait till the end to make my decision on if I think it’s used effectively.

Interested to find out who Zaza is and also what direction the story will take after this most recent conflict. Alabi is looking for his father in the city, but he’s been there for weeks with no leads, will the death he just witnessed shift his goals away from finding his father?

Idk man, I wouldn’t be letting Hailen run off anywhere. And as soon as Kiara was like “they’re my boys too” I would have been like “YEAH WELL WE SHOULD HAVE PROBABLY DISCUSSED THIS TOGETHER BECAUSE YOU CUT ME OUT” anyway it’s fine, I’m fine.

Sen has shit luck for real

Love the introduction of magic (interested to see how large of a part it plays in Alabi reaching his father), and also that navigating the city is a complex maze both physically and socially. There is a clear bad guy, but there is not a clear good guy. The city has turned morality and goodness into all shades of grey.

Azelta’s world has just irrevocably changed with the loss of his protector and advocate. I can see a route he can take to rise even higher, but I do not know if that’s the route the story will take. And what will the influence of the Sarh devil have on Azetla? Things are getting tense!

The idea of these big as fuck dragons swimming makes me ill. Like not only are they a menace in the sky, now you have to worry about them under water too???? 😭😭

Big plot twist, unsure how I feel about it and how it happened, but I do like the conflict that it has brought to the story.

I am enjoying the plot of this story at its base level, but something is different about the story telling in this book that feels off. The repetition is much higher in this volume than in others. I am hoping that this is a one off. I’m still going to finish it, as I am invested in what happens in the larger story arc of the Hunter

Erike always seems to do the right thing, but in chapter 30 we get to see what striving to do the right thing costs him internally. They are not always easy decisions for him to make, and seeing the internal struggles gives some depth to his character, which I like

Chapter 1:
The opening chapter sets the tone as dark but with hope.

There is clear direction for the story established, which I like.

Man vs Machine.

Outstanding descriptions used to convey emotional weight.

Would like stronger setting description.

Chapter 9 was INTENSE! There have been a lot of scenes with emotional tension, but there hasn’t been a lot of action till this chapter. This isn’t bad, the pacing is done well and the intensity of the story has gravity that sucks you in. The action in this scene was not drawn out, it happened quick, and that’s know it goes irl.
