This'll be the third time I try to get through this book. Third time's a charm I guess!

What I like about Mary Beard is her profound focus on the people who lived in the empire, and not just the empire itself; for an empire without it’s people is just an endless placid desert: grand and beautiful on the outside, but a narrow lie on the inside. The glory of the antiquity is built on all manners of ugly, and yet its beauty shines through the cracks.

”I’ve learned things from the sheep, and I’ve learned things from crystal, he thought. I can learn something from the desert, too. It seems old and wise”

This whole book feels like reading through a simple yet deep metaphor describing the great loss of potential many people have but never truly fulfill; due to lifes many challanges and it's network of constant upheaval we get stuck or find ourself stranded on a crossroad without knowing why, this book, so greatly written by Paulo Coelho, gives life to the words describing that hollow pain. I love it thus far.

Love these poems. Edgar had soul and weren’t afraid to share it.

On the Civil War, this book which I recently found by mistake turned out to be a hidden gem describing in great detail the decline of slavery and beginning of the truly "free states" of America. I do not yet know if this book includes the complexity of the many large and horrific battles that scorched american soil, but I do look forward to finding out.
