It started quite good but gets boring when he tells the story of the making of The Platoon. Its almost as if he tells the movie...snooze...

The reader gets the point; that it was draining both physically and mentally - all for the "art". No need to go into detail Charlie.

what I want to read about when I read a an autobiography is the private and personal stuff that we can not deduce or imagine from a movie...

Its dark and even depressing. But beautifully written at times...

That sentence talking about how one does not have to be scared of anything once dead really hit me.

To me this is a book about psychology. Imagine how to deal with taking another human's life. Would you not be haunted by that action? Or Amaranta's fate. Always being 2nd choice, 2nd pretty to Rebeca, n 2nd choice of crespi. And Rebeca should not even have been part of the family. Of course its a trauma for Amaranta and she grows bitter. And Rebeca, what kind of trauma has she been thru in order to eat dirt?

While alive Clara does not seem to take responsibility for the household or have any interest in keeping it in place. But when she dies, suddenly it all falls apart. Does not make any sense to me. Lack of consistency by the author or what???

The story seem to take off half way thru.

Slow burn but now it gets more interesting.

Esteban is really a captivating character, a real monster.

the order of words is weird in the swedish translation.

otherwise, she has great imagination allende.

Esteban is such a monster. Unlike-able.

Allende seem to always create extremely spoilt kid character/protagonists...its provoking n totally unrelatable. :(

Was attracted by the girl on the cover thats why I started reading the book in the first place...

Swedish translation says title is "daughter of fate" but Spanish original title is "daughter of Fortune"...gives a bit different meaning n vibe... hope it has less importance for the story...

Stevens is one interesting character.

as long as he carries out his duties to perfection n high standards he is content - no matter the consequences...

Stevens is sooo married to his job.

Stevens is some character! Devoid of emotions and humor. Married to his job. Tragicomical. What does he stand for?

Interestingly, he has not mentioned Michelle Pfeiffer.

She was such a big part of Scarface and Frankie & Jonny (a movie he does not mentions either...)...

He name drops everyone but her...strange.

Starting to get more interesting when he shares stuff about him going broke. Refreshing and personal. Instead of all the name-dropping and movie making procedure that he repeats on end...

I have to say, Al comes across as a bit a narcissist. For lack of a better word.

Its always he who comes up with some creative genius to add to his character in film parts. And he has difficulty trying to understand the means to work within a budget...

He is 40+ now without mentioning any kids....I wonder when they will turn up...

Al comes across as (extremely) selfish with ONE goal in mind at all times.

But maybe thats what it takes to become the greatest actor of all time.

I have no idea how those who write autobios can remember so much - even dialogue word for word! Incredible.

Good old Al doesnt reveal or elaborate too much.

Would have loved to know why he was late to the audition with Kazan. Was he just high or something else happened?

And why he thought signing "double contracts" (in case he should get fired from the Godfather movie) was a good idea and without ramifications...

i love al pacino but he seems to be really hung up on fame...

The political stuff gets a bit lost on me but I enjoy the other stuff....purcel is my fave character so far...
