I’m loving the Oree/Manning relationship. I’m hoping this is a second chance love story and the whole deal with Shiny will be him learning to appreciate mortals and love through a platonic friendship with Oree.

Really like Oree

The MC is extremely over protective and lies to her kids in that “no, I’m not really mad” way which really really annoys me, but her mom is a narcissist so this is an understandable defense mechanism.

I can totally see why people read this first and then read or watched Shadow and Bone say NK Jemisin did the whole shadow lord thing better.

I was liking this until Cole instigated a fake dating thing which makes no sense and I feel like should’ve been stopped immediately. There are so many ethical problems with this plot twist—he is her superior at work and he’s using her affection for his aunt to manipulate Katie.

So much internalized misogyny. Good art. Decent writing. Like Yorick, even tho he can be clueless and judgemental—still has a good heart. And he’s funny. Like Dr. Mann and agent 355, don’t like how new likable characters frequently die, but I guess that goes with the territory of post apocalyptic fiction.
