This is a fun lil book! But I think sci-fi, or any genre that requires this much world building, is a little hard for me to fully get into.

hmmm

Still a masterpiece.

“You’re too young a man to be panning memories, Adam. You should be getting yourself some new ones, so that the mining will be richer when you come to age.”

Only halfway through this reread and I genuinely don’t think there’s a single emotion in me Steinbeck has left unexplored. Sensational.

I can’t recall any other book that has elicited despair without any accompanying anger and frustration in the way this book is actively doing.

“No one who is young is ever going to be old.”

Delectable is the word my mind keeps returning to as I read this. It is absolutely indulgent.

“It was not a fine river at all, but it was the only one we had and so we boasted about it—how dangerous it was in a wet winter and how dry it was in a dry summer. You can boast about anything if it’s all you have. Maybe the less you have, the more you are required to boast.”

I MEAN WOW! Steinbeck comes out swinging from the get go!

It feels quite fortuitous that I’m reading this book, with such heavy themes of survival and the power of religion, at the same time as Tara Westover’s Educated.

So good! Phenomenal writing.

Our husbands have the same name!

ooooooooooh espoopy!

y'all remember in The Bee Movie when the woman's boyfriend (fiance?) is in disbelief because she's talking to a bee? that's how i feel right now.

Is Magos okay? ((no.))
Also, I've been watching Hacks so in my mind Jackie is Josephina.
