How am I only 72% done but I’m on the second last short story….with all due respect, Mr. Joyce, your last story in this collection is a novella, not a short story

He kinda set the blueprint for my favourite kinds of narratives…and I had no idea…and like while I’m not like ABSOLUTELY obsessed with it I AM MORE THAN obsessed with the path it’s paved for the stories I’m obsessed with if that makes sense

The sheer amount of quotes I’ve highlighted…she captures my experience so accurately it’s so insane to feel so regular and understood and accompanied

We are SO back ugh I love this…what a writer, what a mind

I saw critiques about how she has zero work ethic and relies on men’s income and fleeting hobbies to survive and doesn’t stick with things when they aren’t exciting anymore. I think that is a really reductive and disappointing way to interpret her gracious storytelling. If that’s your takeaway, you were reading for the wrong reason.

Shit shit shit I’m crying on the TTC now…I love her present-day chapters so deeply, I cannot believe she can put these experiences down to paper so accurately. Her experience with doctors and therapists is too common. I really like this and I see why the other chapters focused on men exist…it’s vital context to her paranoia and trauma in any relationship…”I feel like I’m getting in trouble!”

Okay, I understand this a little bit more and like can see it as a reflection on her life and experiences and what her recent struggle made her reflect on more … so I’m not as like disappointed in all the lack of selfhood detached from men every other chapter … it’s a very real and prominent anchor unfortunately and it seems she’s just considering an alternative to that so I can’t fault her ? You know?

Feeling a little different about this now…it’s getting a little too male-centered for my liking but maybe she’s just like laying the groundwork for some big revelation? Still really well written but I definitely preferred everything about mental health and the really fragile process of receiving treatment

Reading a short story a day before bed to keep the doctor away, but these are giving me nightmares (but his writing like as a craft is groundbreaking)
