The first part of the book oz mainly concerned with the history of the end of the second Jewish temple on Jerusalem. as such, I think the writer has done a masterful job, both in getting the historical context right as well as making the read suspenseful and interesting.

Although Finkelman is spot on in his analysis, he is - to a certain extant - cherry-picking his data. I hope to elaborate in my review to come.

It's amazing how Agnon utilizes old-fashioned Rabbinic Hebrew to tell such captivating, humorous stories. (I'm reading this in the original Hebrew.)
