ok I spoke too soon….we’re getting a more nuanced Cathy portrayal

I forgot how wildly sexist this book is. doesn’t mean it isn’t a worthy and beautiful read, but wow does it sting to hear Steinbeck give Cathy’s exact mirror (Charles) a much more sympathetic and morally complex backstory than he ever allows Cathy. Such was life in the 1950s I suppose!

10% in and it already is hitting 🤯
