Really really enjoying literature of this time and place with the “haint” story mixed in, makes it tolerable (?) to know they had helper ghosts. It’s a tough read for the reminder that Americans “owned” slaves and black people had to be emancipated from powerful white men in the Deep South. Reading this is a form of reparation.
