with the way i pick my books to read, i haven’t read a good extreme horror in a minute which bums me out but i know if i put my system on pause i’ll go into a reading slump lmao

revisiting this bc i stopped about 60% of the way a couple years ago

the main antagonist just did blackface to portray maddy who, mind u, was white (passing) up until the point they saw her curly hair. i’ve experienced this before and i’m sure many mixed people have too that when white people find out you have a black parent, they can’t see past that. it’s like they fixate on your having a black parent and that’s all u are. i know the slurs are coming next

ok i know i said i was sat but this is literally carrie plagiarized just with a white passing biracial girl. she’s got a prayer closet and everything. except instead of being “scary/creepy carrie” who got her period, she’s “mad mad maddy” with an afro. let’s see if this gets original further on

not sure if this is sloppy writing or if the author is purposely showcasing the fmc’s lack of time awareness, but years two through six are wrapped up within 40 pages. does it feel like 4 years have passed to her or have 4 years actually passed? if it’s the latter, it’s poor writing bc we don’t get to stick with the fmc for long in that time

ok.. so i see what people are saying. the way it’s written is so overly descriptive for no reason. at first i attributed it to the character’s ocd but i was wrong lol. it’s either written (partially or all) by ai or by a high schooler in a creative writing class

so… only got 32 pages into this during my shift 😭 i think what’s tripping me up is that the narration shifts between third and first person in the same sentence without any breaks. “Carlotta closed her eyes and braced herself I hope I could keep from punching out her fuckin pea brain”. that’s how it’s written… i gotta really slow down and figure out who’s talking

reading this as a seattle renter and 3 pages in we’re the first city mentioned when it comes to high rent prices lmaooo. we have the highest minimum wage for a major city ($21.30) and yet it’s not a livable wage i love it here

i kinda feel like im going insane… a book on modern intimacies written by a man who cheated on his husband, is really only summarizing movies and plays without a lot of analysis, and then says “there is no marriage (nor novel) without adultery”. huh?!

i havent cried over a book in so long but especially not so early into a book…

3 stars to the second “book”. it was alright. i liked the first part better than the second part

when she went missing my first thought was “i wonder if the police checked her car for clues”. guess where her body was found? i guess these police are shit at their job

every time i get into the book, she drops a patrick califia quote…

“women in pants lost your people your land”. i get that this is the late 60s and this seems to be betty’s feminist awakening but this seems absurd even for the time. this sounds like something a redpiller would say to women today not a white dude in the 60s talking about native women. but maybe im wrong idk
