"It's not only in dreams, you see, that we find ourselves facing what is yet to be in what was long forgotten, and speaking what seems nonsense because we will not see its meaning."

...When we crave power over life- endless wealth, unassailable safety, immortality- then desire becomes greed. And if knowledge allies itself to that greed, then comes evil. Then the balance of the world is swayed, and ruin weighs heavy in the scale."

Atuan already reads much differently than Earthsea- Atuan feels more "in the moment", Earthsea reads like someone recounting a fantasy epic

Well, this is definitely horrific, haven't decided if I'm fully on board yet (even though I'm nearly done) lol. I think I'll end up liking it in the end. I do agree with a few observations I've seen about the characters not being written like women, and I agree in parts. I'll update more with my final review.

So far I'm getting the impression that Cooper is a heavy influence for Chuck Palahniuk. Its incoherence/stream of consciousness is very close to the Beats, especially Burroughs, though a little more coherent than reading Naked Lunch.

Woof, this is short but it's already a slog to read through. Purple writing abound- I can't tell if I'm reading a story or a script at times.

Ngl, I've been trying to get through this since October. It's really good, but unlike Exquisite Corpse, there is a lot of purple text happening @__@ It's not annoying in a boring sense, there's just a lot of descriptive text to get through each chapter. Brite's writing is so decadent though that I'm having a good time, but it is slow going with this one, which I'm going to chalk up to the fact this is his first novel

I checked this collection out from my library and now I think I'll need to buy this myself to really dissect these stories. It's hard to tell how much I need to read between the lines of Ligotti's stories. With this one, it could be about the fear of irrevelancy, death, and/or the loop we get stuck in going through the motions until we're trapped with an "untidiness" like Alice

I enjoyed this one much more than The Frolic. A classic cult/eldritch story, with an interesting parallel to incels. The plot of this one unfolds pretty predictably, but it's fun experiencing the build up and break down of obsessive romantic possession.

Not giving this one a rating as I feel it just didn't hit the particular flavor of horror I enjoy. I feel like I missed something with this one, as I've read comments online praising how terrifying it is. I'll return to it once I finish the rest of the collection, but to me it's just a King-esque abduction of a child, not much else (?)
