another re read to get me out of a slump. slay

i’m not liking how forced and extremely punctuated the dialogue is between Paul and Leonard. And having to read a grown-ass adult’s name (unexplained, btw) as “Hungry Paul” makes me cringe. But I’m powering through. Will withhold judgement on Paul and his life, but love Leonard so far. Can’t tell if there’s obscure sexism sometimes or if i’m reading into it…

ALMOST

condescending, lowkey sexist but very omniscient, shrewd narrator. interesting start off but okay!

“Paul doesn’t like his women petite and blonde and “beautiful”, he likes them curvy and “exotic”!!??? WHAAAT

“i’m just a trailer park girl with horrible parents and now i’m rich…sigh….this town hates me”…

the dialogue is kinda funny at times. questionable….but funny. what do you MEAN a body is found and Paul is just suddenly off camping and leaving his pregnant wife. i

“But no brutality disgusted her: I suppose she has an innate admiration of it, if only her precious person were secure from it”.

Catherine is actually wild and crazy. everyone is.

“But, Heathcliff, if I dare you now, will you venture? If you do, I’ll keep you. I’ll not lie there by myself: they may bury me twelve feet deep, and throw the church over me, but I won’t rest till you are with me. I never will!”

Nelly is the only redeemable character as of right now. I forgot how much I literally forgot about this novel lol. Also, the casual mentioning from Heathcliff that his plan was to enact revenge on Hindley then just check out of the world?? like 😭

Toni Morrison has such an incredible talent with her words that make you feel emotions to their fullest extent and even further. takes me one page of her writing to make me sob like a baby.

i can’t believe i never read this as a girl. i would have held Anne and her story near and dear to my heart. i’m happy i’m reading it now :’)
