Carrie has returned to being a surgeon under her old mentor on a year placement in Sweden. The kids are liking it and they’re all learning Swedish. Carrie has not seen Johan since it all went down, he’s giving her space to get her life and head together and also he ended up being left by his wife. Robin still sees the kids but carries has realised she never knew the guy. Carrie meets Johan after all this time

The book forwards at the end to Carrie living in Sweden. With her kids. Her sister Maya has moved over as au pair after her life in the USA went to shit. Turns out Robin was also playing games with her relationship with her mom hiding card and presents and booking holidays when her mom wanted to come down and making it seem like she had no interest. They have a better relationship now.

In fact he told Carrie his boss got caught for fraud and everyone was made redundant but now Carrie looks in to it there were no redundancies. She realises how much of her life with him has been lead without her realising, or her just allowing it.,

The calls Robin and asks for the truth, Robin admits he knew of her when he met her. That he had told Johan to send her away. That this whole time he’s worked for shady people doing shady things. He lost his job recently because while he was on ‘holiday’ from that job he was out working for the guy he was working for when Johan was arrested, work found out and fired him and he never told Carrie.

Meanwhile Carrie and Johan had landed and driven to her house to find Robin not there, Carrie called the police and then when her mom called with the kids canceled that. She wanted to go straight to them but Johan said they couldn’t drive anymore they’d been up for too long.
Carrie looks for a cab but no one will take her at this time this far out. She goes upstairs and takes Johan outside and they hook up.

They head back to England together. Carrie calls her mom and asks her to dig.
Carries mom comes back saying she has the kids. She leaned on a police friend to triangulate his phone signal and it was hotel near her house so she went and befriended the front desk to let her up and go the kids, he gave them willingly and they’re not hurt and think they’re getting a plane to Carrie.

Johan calls her and while she is frantically heading to the airport and tells her he will meet her at the airport he must tell her something.

Carrie gets a phone call from Maya saying their dad has deteriorated in the home and died. Johan comforts her. Carrie tries to call robin and her calls are ignored (unlike robin). Things escalate when she gets a call from people who are checking in to their air b&b that robin is not on site to give them the keys. She suddenly realises robin can see her messages with Johan. She repeatedly calls him to explain

He tells her that their fixer who sorted their dive passes and stuff asked him to carry Ritalin over and as he was carrying anti biotics for carries mom he figured why not. Only it turned out it wasn’t Ritalin. The fixer felt bad and therefore kept getting his bosses to help Johans situation provided that Carrie and her mom stopped poking. He said he thought of the guy a lot and never looked him up when he got out

Being from her mom and that’s why her mom was helping (guilty conscience) Carrie tells him she wants answers now, not this I can’t tell you this or that nonsense. They admit they’re attracted to each other still and value their current situations to risk anything as they sit down to talk

Took antibiotics to Thailand for her for a charity as a favour but that’s not the methamphetamine he was charged with. Carrie is annoyed her mom has kept it a secret that he smuggled the forbidden anti biotics so her mom could show off to her ex (it was his brothers charity she was helping). Johan comes over after having been called by his mom and speaks to Carrie, confirms his mom is wrong about the drugs

His mom is shocked to see her/find out they are in contact. She tells Carrie he’s happy with his wife and she needs to leave him alone. Carrie has a defiant moment and snaps at her about how she was left in the dark when johans mom said that he was in prison because he was smuggling drugs for carries mom. After johans mom leaves she calls her mom, she eventually gets back to her and admits that Johan

She messages him back hours later accepting the free stay but he sees before she can delete it. She is going there when robin calls her for a chat / I feel like he knows, surely he has access to their air b&b account. He’s sad and misses her and she feels bad again but still drives on.
Outside there is a car carries assumes it’s the last guest until she sees her and it’s Johan’s mom.

They’re looking at his air b&b profile and talking about what happened when Maya accidently presses request booking. Johan sees the notification and calls her via the app. She apologises for the request, they chat a bit after Maya mentions Carrie is in Sweden, he offers her a night off in his air b&b. She declines and they end the call, later he messages her on the app that he misses her, deletes it but she saw it

She feels bad she hasn’t told robin anything from the start of him booking johans air b&b to her seeing him in Sweden. Later she flies back for a 2 week placement with her old mentor. Her sister flies over to keep her company for a week (she’s over from the states & also helping move their dad to a care home as he has dementia. She’s told her sister everything from the start so she knows the deal

That he can’t say. Can’t say what happened really. Can’t say how he got pardoned. Can’t say why he couldn’t tell her anything then or now. Really odd tbh.

She tells him she’s going home to her husband and kids (oh also the kid is his step kid!) and he tells her he loved her as much as she loved him and he still thinks about her. Crazy. She flows home. No answers.

He decided to go last minute. She talks to him for a bit and things where I am confused

He seems surprised that she is surprised he is out. He tells her that his people reported her to the hospital so she would go home, same with feeding back he had a girlfriend in the drug ring - so she would stop poking around?!! She asks him wtf like was he a drug mule or not, what happened and he just repeatedly tells her

Life and sanity was too much of a risk. But then she has a really shit night parenting the kids and she’s like no fuck this I’m going. She books a hotel and sees her mentor and also goes to an air b&b conference there because her and robin have an air b&b and she used to go to these. She checks the delegate list for Johan and he’s not on there so she feels safe to go.
When she goes there she runs into him

When he sends her over the listing she looks at the host and it’s Johan. It said he’s married, has a son. She’s in shock. When did he get out?
She googles him and turns out he’s been out for like 6 years and got a royal pardon. She’s angry he never called and explained himself to her.
She cancels going because after speaking to her sister about the possibility of running in to him uprooting her current

He was drug smuggling and had a girlfriend. They had only been together 3 months (!) but she’s hurt. His family come to pack up his flat which she is living in and tell her that HE wanted her out. She is heartbroken for a long time, luckily manages to save her job/reputation etc.

Is on the line as word has got back to the UK the man she’s dating has been arrested for drug smuggling. Carries mom encourages Carrie to go home and cut ties. Thankful they were not married and it can be put down to a fling. She sees Johan in jail and he tells her to go home, the fling is over and her mom needs to stop poking around as it’s actually making his life harder. She goes home. She hears that

They get married on the beach. The night of their wedding the Thai police storm the beach and arrest him. Carrie calls her mom who is a professional protester and she flies out to help get him out and use her connections. Her mom’s connections tell her Johan is being looked after in prison and they assume it’s his family until they meet his family and they think it’s Carrie. Meanwhile carries job at the hosp

She comes out and meets him out there, he is late to meet her because he had issues with his diving equipment, then wants to go alone to an area to drop some things off but she insists on going with him. He chats to a woman who seems over familiar with him as Carrie watches from afar. After he admits his dive passes have had issues and that’s why he’s so on edge. He asks her to marry him and spur of the moment

Carrie met Johan when she was a jr surgeon and he had come in with a trauma patient. They had an instant connection but were advised not to date because they met through her working. He waits 4 months until enough time has passed there shouldn’t be red tape and they go back to his place where she then rarely leaves. They have a whirlwind romance, he has a job to do in Thailand and suggests she comes out with him

Start of the book we meet Carrie who is preparing to go back to work after having some time off after having her children (twins, with a difficult pregnancy and birth) they’re six now and she is looking to return to being a surgeon. Her husband robin fully supports this despite supporting them for the last years when Carrie didn’t want to work. Carrie met him at a charity fundraiser a few years after Johan.

And the book ends on that, Yrsa pulled up in a deserted area, thinking she only has one shot at Mary.

Mary is pleading about why Kyle has cheated and then goes to show yrsa her phone when she drops it in to the back, she sees Stephen in the back… Yrsa locks the doors and tells her to turn her phone off. Now Mary wants out. Yrsa drives, she has a needle left she can use on Mary and then two bodies to dispose of without leading back to herself. Mary begs her that she’s not seen anything won’t say anything

Partially covered with her coat, when she leave her house a girl is there, asking if she’s Yrsa who has been sleeping with her boyfriend, her boyfriend is Kyle. She’s been sending the emails. She thinks Yrsa knows Kyle has a gf. Yrsa is desperate to get rid of her and get back to the car. She thinks she’s got rid of her so goes to the car but then Mary reappears and gets in the car… she tells her to get out

She suggests they go for a drive and then suggests they have sex in the back, then she gives him some ket because she said it’ll make the sex better, while he’s slightly k’d out she injects him with a substance that will kill him.
Then she’s a bit stuck she didn’t bring cleaning products because she didn’t plan to kill him, just to play. She drives back to hers to get bleach she leaves him in his car
