Chapter 42 they finally quote a Catholic bioethicist

I think it's pretty telling that after only the first chapter I felt compelled to come here and note that this is off to a very rocky start. Rip to my brain cells if I keep reading.

Reads like a memoir. Not a bad thing, just a fact.

Includes a "and then the whole bus clapped scene" when I thought it couldn't get worse. Negative stars.

I'm three pages in and I'd like to throw up. SHUT UP ABOUT LIEUTENANT WHATEVER-HIS-FACE ALREADY.

I would say the second story was mediocre but the third one was excellent. They have all at least been somewhat amusing.

I'm pleasantly surprised to be finding this highly amusing. Good character banter.

Spoiler alert, but I just want to say that I think it's pretty stupid of Theo to be trying to kill Soren because if you're trying to divide the kingdom, I personally think it would be much easier for the two sides to each have a visible leader. This is bothering me a lot. I feel like the killing Soren subplot is more to make angst than sense.

The rate at which Kvothe cycles between smart and mind numbingly thick is really impressive.

It seems that the fundamental question of the book didn't get asked until nearly the 50% mark and I consider that a flaw.

I would propose that it is possible for authors to write smug, self-satisfied, insufferable characters without coming off that way themselves.

It's possible but it's not happening in this book.

This place needs some better ORM like seriously Spensa is in no shape to be flying and her entire flight should have IMSAFED out like ten training events ago

They're allowed to have food and drink in the simulator room: unrealistic

So he's just made a snide remark about Joan of Arc and most other things I was going to let slide but this needs to be documented

All the potential surprises or twists at this point I know are coming - which would be fine if it was just good writing and good foreshadowing but it feels like the author is just throwing filler in to make everything take longer

I think the question at this point is whether Henry is going to do anything at any point besides being dragged around and tied up.

I've realized that a big part of the problem with this book is how much time the author spends having the cupboard characters make grandiose speeches about their history or future but I have no context for them and no insight into these characters or motivations and I have been given no information about their history so I really don't care about any of it and if he's trying to bring me up to speed he's failing miser
