just finished the first part: i have just this round pit widening in my stomach with each and every anecdote and story. i feel so full of grace and love from these stories- from the care and hope that emanates from this book. it’s taken me aback. can’t wait to keep reading. i think it’ll keep me sane at natcon

so i started this one MONTHS AGO but i never actuallt kept reading- anyway here i am: 100 pages in and it’s fantastic i’m really enjoying. kathy is so autistic #love you gurl. like the way she explains herself and how everything was is super duper interesting because i relate so hard. snyway i feel like it’s gonna be tragic so i’m not exactly ready

i’m looking to make this my project of the semester- my creative nonfiction class and my desire to read some philosophy are compelling me !!! so frequent updates whenever i finish an essay or a subsection ! anyway ! i hope he tries to argue why life is worth living !!! it might be quite depressing otherwise 😔😔 but i’m following it so far !!! but we’ll see how much i do actuallt understand !

what i completely do NOT understand is how a lesbian in 1959 is so unable to understand the threat of coming out. like girl please. it just feels really unrealistic ! i don’t usuallt care about realism but that does NOT apply in this case

i understand the uncanny valley now !!!! it feels like y2k pop girlie harassment but in 1959 ! there’s no historicism ! but that’s okay because i am loving the plot so much !! also bisexual mention 😳😳

i am chewing this thing up and swallowing it up ravenously !!! i am loving every recollection evelyn has ! monique not so much !!! some of the writing just feels a bit off…: the first page of this book has such a line “as a biracial woman”…. oh i can tell ms gurl is not biracial ! perhaps it’s because it’s first person perspective…. not sure ! but that’s okay i’m enjoying it regardless !!!

chapter 9 was definitelt something !! not always such a big fan of exposition like that- but it worked here ! it felt like it was talking itself in circles but that’s a manifesto if i’ve ever read one ! i have no idea what to expect if the rest of this one but we’re enjoying !!!

okay so it got super horny super fast !!! i can kinda see what george is tryna say but i can’t fully articulate it !? but what i can’t get over is how this book was written in the 40s !!! it is so easy to read and it feels like it came straight out of like the 2000s with its language like i’m honestly dumbfounded !!!

and just like that were so back !!! winston please stop being so entitled !!! it’s unbearable !!! lowkey love the writing style. and by lowkey i mean high key it’s super nice and clear and interesting. i can’t put my finger on why

it just feels like there’s a clear passion that’s been imbued into this novel that i just can’t help but cherish !!! thank you jorjor and keep the misogyny at bay 🙏🙏

ALMOST DONE !!! uni hasn’t stopped me !!! (classes ended like a month ago) but i love it. i don’t have all that much more to say but i’ve listened to patti’s first album and it’s actually kinda fire !? not something i’d listen to all the time but it’s super interesting and absolutelt a mesh of poetry and rock and it’s really well done !!!

been slowly chipping away at this one for ages but i am LA LA LOVING IT !!! there is a clear reverence for the time in her life that she’s talking about and that translates so well to her narrative style and voice. she doesn’t have to tell you she loved ther time at the chelsea hotel you feel it. and books like that are so easy to read. not to hate but my year of rest and relaxation i’m looking at you

i’m enjoying it more now !! probably more for the spectacle than anything else. i fear it doesn’t have anything unique to say tho … #haymitch forever. the reaping always gets me i can’t deal with it !!!

it’s my personal belief and delusion that this will break the reading slump and i will read so much over the semester ! it is my personal goal to read less classics because they take me too long to get through. but this is okay so far ! i’m not liking it as much as ballad of songbirds and snakes ! but that’s okay ig ! need it to warm up a little ! perhaps i’ve overhyped it !

2/3 sections done ! california republic is cool ! politically pretty hard to pin down an easy ideology ! which i think is why i’m liking it so much- it’s easy to pick and choose which bits u agree with ! but i’m a sucker for a collection of stories / experiences. next stop feminism ! and so far it’s pretty thought provoking ! but nuance must be used (brain power what !?)

so i’m a #sucker for near-future dystopia ! i love how they make machines make art ! super awesome way it thinks about truth, although i may not agree with it ! winston please no more misogyny ! it’s not a good colour in you !

just finished the first section of this book. and each story contains a small memory or remark from the 60s. I want to believe this is a reflection of the decade as a whole but i fear i can only go on vibes rather than actual facts - it aligns with the vibes tho !! i feel like didions reflections are a way of processing her own mental illness in this period, or even just feeling her own sanity. all in all- i love !

thank you lila for the rec ! loving this so far but not for any intellectual reason - i like to see thing i recognise - like the doors !! and the black panther party ! and janis joplin ! and then keep reading. i read it this half delirious between my shifts at work and perhaps that could be the mysterious cause behind the lack of intellectual stimulation it gave me !

my reading goal for this year is quite indomitable ! but the reading slump will be conquered !!! poor basil ! he was the og unrequited gay lover ! dorian is so stupid but talks out of his ass so strongly i love him. can’t wait to see where it goes ! it seems to have just changed to a bit of a grander perspective- not focusing on the little details and scenes but describing events over the years !

finally starting this !! and basil is such a little stinky artsy gay and dorian is also twinky but hallwell is just normal and oblivious to the insane romance going on. also dorian is so easily manipulated ! how do you get persuaded so easily into believing beauty and vanity is everything !!!

enjoying it a lot tho can’t lie

omg i literallt started this today. never in a long time have i done this. i think my brain has been starved for entertainment… but i like this, evidently a lot. it was different from how i expected, or maybe how i wanted. i think i can feel the authors own experience bleed through the pages. which is always a good sign. but i just think i would’ve done it differently, but alas, i am no author

i usually wouldn’t add another update until i’d finished the book but OH MY GOD. i am so so upset. it is so much better than i’d even hoped since i last put it down. the way mcewan captures the suffering pain made me cry on several occasions in hyde park. i feel yearning for these characters. honestly the best book i’ve read in so long.

omg i am so attached and so invested. i haven’t felt this way about a book in so so long. it’s so so good. met this girl at an arcade bar who lectures english literature (she reminded me of ms. cardinale) but she said that it would get even better and it has. robbie is such an interesting character and i want him and cecilia happen !!! anyway perspective has just switched- can’t wait to hear brionys perspective

i am quite thoroughly enjoying this !! it’s spiffing ! (i am trying to talk like these stuck up characters !!). anyway i like how each character gets caught up in their own little worlds and ambitions. i think i do like cecilia the best - she just seems nice and interesting and like she’s hiding something- very intriguing !! anyway no plot has really happened yet so i’m waiting for that but otherwise perfection

finally found the time and energy to properly start reading this. i bought it in bordeaux (like 3 weeks ago) and my girl is HEAVY. not fatshaming this book but jesus christ you’re only 400 pages how can you weigh 30kg !? also did get rained on- manifesting no mould. anyway i quite like the way mcewan writes, maybe it’s just these characters but it’s quite introspective and i am a MASSIVE fan of introspection !
