this book is so so good but it made me so upset i had to put it down for a bit

Pirates were very invested in good treatment of sailors, and on their prize vessels would investigate the commanders behavior to see if they deserved punishment.

Quartermaster: elected by crew, counterbalanced captains power. Keeper of pirate traditions, valued position of Smart seaman. Divided food, in charge of all booty. Selected and organized boarding parties (who got special privilege of first selection of booty), assembled sailors on prize vessel to ask how captain treated them, looked at cargo, often captain of prize vessel if turned into new ship.

The quartermaster led the boarding party and would ask the crew of a ship being raided who among them would “serve under the deaths head and black colors,” which was p successful.

going to update w my favorite pirate facts I’m learning. sailors invented “strikes” when they would strike (lower) the sails on their ship to prevent them from sailing to protest low wages!
