Listened to this while I ran today. Good so far, but second audiobook in a row where they use the quote by Mike Tyson about everyone having a plan till they get punched in the face.

Going to see what the Matt Haig buzz is about. In the past 24 hours DNF’d Lesser Ruins (seemed like the first 20 pages were going to be the next 200), and The Second Coming by Garth Hallberg—been a while since I read opening pages that self-conscious. Too bad because cover looked cool.

Genuinely curious what kind of person would read this and take it seriously. Just listened to law one, “Never outshine the master,” and it’s a bizarre start for a number of reasons. Reads like satire, but I don’t think it is. Made me think of the episode of This American Life about the janitor who ran the school system in New York and did things like turn the heat off to teacher’s rooms.

Normally don’t update till I’m done, but I listened to Gillian Flynn’s introduction on my drive home today and that alone was worth starting this.

I love The Magus and The Collector by John Fowles but I’m almost 100 pages in and this is incredibly boring. I’m going to have to surrender on this one.

I loved this book. Perfect short novel.
