This is such a fun eco horror that’s also an adventure mystery quest. If you have a fear of caves or tight spaces, pass though!

I think my expectations were too high. I admit I’m still curious enough to see what’s going to happen here, but the toxic relationships and abusive marriages and housewives makes me mostly feel bad for the kids.

It’s a bit of a fever dream so far

I’m just so mad at Tamineh for her decisions at this point I don’t even know if she can come back from her own mistakes 😣😣😣

I totally understand why this reads a lot like HP- magical academy, the chosen one trope, the friends who adopt her into their own families, and some ancient evil lurking, plus all the delicious scrumptious treats and drinks!

I got super sucked in and might finish this in a day. It is such a great audiobook if you’ve ever been curious about the undercover missions of the NAACP in the fight against the KKK and race riots

It reads a lot younger than what I was expecting! It is more middle grade than YA, although I am definitely still enjoying the read. It’s definitely magical academy with unexplained magic.

It’s feeling upper YA to me, which I am not mad about- it’s feeling very fairytale as well, evil stepmother, a prophecy, but also the main character is a dream walker and can influence people through their dreams— she seems half fae and is called a witch. I’m just scared I’m going to be traumatized by the end.

I do not know where this is going other than its going to be a colossal wreck

I don’t hate it, but this has gone way more political than I expected.

The second half is ramping into high gear with a new character and a hero type.. of course he’s a combination of a spy thriller, and some current world politics

This just took a really dark turn… US is f’d in world politics

I am so intrigued by the plot and where it is going… almost to the b-side which I have a feeling is going to be a shift in dimensions

I didn’t realize this is a time loop slasher 🫣🔪✌🏽

Well we have gone utter depressing… death, grief processing, melancholy, suicide of siblings, forgotten family history, the Khmer Rouge, the cultural revolution, migration, nationalism, and utter loneliness

JC is an assmunch. Andrew is insufferable. The amount of gaslighting and passive aggressive behavior in this book is astonishing. I hope some character becomes tolerable.

I resonate so much with the shame of not being fluent in the languages of my parents… there is an honesty to her writing, a pettiness to the characters that mirrors freshmen competition, and it’s also very self indulgent

So far this is a little dry for me. The subject matter is interesting enough, as Lily the FMC is off to Taiwan for a summer, with a goal of becoming fluent in Chinese… I resonate with her feeling of otherness but also she’s hard to relate to… I shall report back as I get further in.

I am definitely loving all the 90s historical references and I didn’t guess one of the twists so far.. I suspect everyone!

So this is going to be one of those books where every chapter ends with a heart pounding
