With the end of this book, I learn that Joan has to find her own path, without her mother’s love. She’s all grown now. Her mom’s life lessons can only guide her. She now embraces her past, while continuing on with her future. She is her own woman. I found this book to be sooo powerful.

Flashing back and forward between Joan’s new life in Memphis with her mom and sister and to her mom’s life. When her mom met her dad for the first time. I find this quite fascinating. Seeing her mom’s past compared to how her father grew to be so gruesome draws my attention. From this, it talks about stories of their new neighbors. Learning of their experiences with racism. Trauma. Freedom.

Fleeing from her home at 10 years old, Joan, her mother, and her little sister, Mya, have just escaped from the grasp of their father. He was very violent to her mother. The book then fast towards to them moving to Memphis, their mom’s childhood town, a mostly black neighborhood.

After her kiss with Prince Maxon, America has thought more about her true feelings towards him. But there is one problem, Aspen is here. He has been announced as one of the new royal guards, being placed as one of America’s personal guards. Yet Maxon doesn’t know Aspen is America’s first love. In the end, America feels more connected towards Maxon. She tells Aspen off. And becomes fully invested in the process.

America has developed deeper feeling towards Maxon. She doesn’t know exactly how to feel about them yet as she is also confused about her feelings for Aspen. Not sure if she should move on further with Maxon, she also is a key target by the other girls.

In Illéa, America Singer’s family is considered fives in the numerical caste system. Until she receives the opportunity to be a part of The Selection. Thirty five girls chosen to be the next potential princess. America doesn’t want any of this, she wants to marry Aspen, her true love.

In her past, when faced with tragedy, Evelyn covered up the truth about who was the drunk driver in the car crash that involved Harry and a man named James, who was Harry’s lover. She had placed James in the drivers seat to cover up that Harry was the real driver.

Now on to her fifth marriage to Harry Cameron. Evelyn could be with the love of her life, Celia, and Harry could be with, John Braverman, Celia’s husband. It was considered to be a love-square. But Evelyn wanted more than that, she wanted a baby with Harry. And to still be with Celia.

Evelyn discovers that her new coming friend, Celia St. James is gay and that her husband, Don, is cheating on her all while being at the same party. Shocker! Not only was her friendship with Celia more than she thought, but also her marriage was completely over. She felt like she was living a lie.

Monique Grant, the narrator is given the opportunity to interview, world renowned celebrity, Evelyn Hugo. But instead, Evelyn gives Monique the chance to write Evelyn’s biography. With that, Evelyn expresses the ins and outs of the beginning of her first marriage to Don Adler. So far, I believe that Evelyn is only using Don for fame.
