Struggling not to DNF this with this last novella... I've been adoring every single one of these stories, and now the last one is so awful I don't think that it will payoff to slugg through this racist, misogynistic narrator (and writer...??) Ugh

Feeling so fortunate to live in a time where I didn't have to wait to read this sequel...yes I am fantasizing of being an undercover cop.

Part 1 follows Antoinette's life in Jamaica after the Emancipation Act of 1834 came into effect. Rich text packed with themes on racism, slavery, social hierarchy, nature & gothic elements like prophetic dreams, premonitions & lots of foreshadowing! Makes for a very engaging read.

A and her mother are societal outcasts because of their current financial situation. In swoops Mr.Mason to do what men do best...

Not me casually reading a first edition worth $2000 that I bought for like $5....Thank fuck I haven't been annotating directly...

Agatha Christie would have loved this.

Embarking on a journey down a rabbit hole on this introduction.

The blurb reminded me of Gossip Girl, but I'm sat for whatever ride this is taking me on!

This is not hitting. It's either because it's the last book of the series, and I'm not really used to reading series, and so I'm getting bored or... there are way too many characters in this! I know it's a curse about love, but surely every character doesn't need a love interest? This is a family matter people why are we involving so many outsiders and so many MEN?

I hoped to detach myself from that sum of the misdeeds and compliances and cowardly acts of the people we knew, whom we loved, whom we carried...all of us— in our blood.

Oh, the (body) horror. Harrison has my twisted little heart.

I am devouring this with a feral hunger.

Perhaps priest and magician were once one, but the priest, learning humility in the face of God, discarded the spell for prayer.

I did, however, spend 2 minutes raging about how I hate the cover design... I have the colorful one giving 00s weheartit... (the gold one is marginally better imo). Only darling TJR would make me go for a book with a cover like this
