"Implicit in this mimesis of restorability is the belief that catastrophes are themselves (not simply narratively but actually) reconstructable" we'll keep trying

part iv of chapter 4 was a drag ngl dgshhrhf mostly because of my lack of interest and knowledge in the subject matter. but overall, ch 4 is my second favorite & the one i took the longest time getting through so far because the amount of times i had to close the book after reading a really painful beautiful thing and spend days trying not to think about it

"Even after the resurrection, he remained embodied: at the very end of Luke, he invited the apostles to look at his hands and to "handle" him to assure themselves he is not a spirit (24:36–40). While they are still "disbelieving for joy," he asks the question that is the universal signal among sentient creatures that they are sentient: "Have you anything here to eat?" .......... no words

[...] the story will sometimes suddenly pause, break into a brief spread of names, then continue once more. In some ways, this most contracted instance of the alternation is the most haunting, for it is as though the large figure is suddenly for a moment swallowed into a group of figures on a dusty road, from which a moment later we watch him break away and emerge toward us once more.
