Very relaxing and profound. Also a very quick, flowing read, doesn’t feel like it drags at all. Looking forward to the rest of it.

Walking, talking, eating, sleeping. Insert terrible song here. Walking, talking, eating, sleeping. Tom Bombadil. More walking, talking, eating, and sleeping. Another stupid song. Walk, talk, eat, sleep. Strider. Talking, eating, and sleeping. OPEN UP IN THE NAME OF MORDOR. Walking, talking, eating, singing, sleeping. Gandalf? WAIT, FRODO, NO! Shit… more walking, talking, eating, and sleeping… ELVES!

Chapter 1 could’ve been 2 or 3 chapters. Took me days to get through this on the audiobook.

I’m reading this book for class, but they’re having us read it out of order… damn.

“If that’s being queer, then we could do with a bit more queerness in these parts.”

Amen.

Poitier was sleeping on a roof and working for nothing as a dishwasher, but still refused to accept a potential breakthrough movie role where his character doesn’t do the right thing because he wants his parents to be proud of what’s on-screen. That’s commitment.

He was also thrown out of his first ever audition at the American Negro Theater and told to find work as a dishwasher. Wonder how that turned out.

Who would have guessed that such a groundbreaking, revolutionary artist and performer came from such humble beginnings?

Honestly, I probably could’ve, but nonetheless, the way Poitier articulates his youth on the extremely remote Cat Island really takes you there and appreciate his artistry even more.
