It’s good. McMurphy is a really likable character, and the Chief is beginning to show signs of getting out of his “funk.” He spoke to McMurphy, and he denied the aides insistence that he mop the floors one morning, walking away and disobeying them.

The story starts out narrated by the Chief, an unreliable narrator who seems to be paranoid that the nurses and staff are trying to use machinery to “fix” the patients, implanting cogs and wires into them. At this point, we have learned that the Chief is faking deafness in a way that he deems “cagey.” He does whatever the orderlies tell him to. McMurphy has is admitted, and he is already causing trouble.
