Unknowingly started this on the anniversary of the Me Too movement going viral. Deeply disturbing but so far the treatment of the subject matter has been done well, which is a pretty impossible task. I think one of the great things fiction can do is provide a container for the more horrifying aspects of human behavior.

Can’t believe I’ve slept on this for so long. From the first sentence I knew this was one of those books that just stays with you.

God I wish he was still around. So concerned and insightful on the toxically “public” human condition following the invention of cell phone cameras and early forms of social networking of the early 2000’s. I can only imagine the essays and books he would write today on the subject. I will say the tax lingo is taxing but worth it 😭

Hmm. Tedious and not in the fun way. Halfway through and still struggling to connect with most of the characters. A lot of bouncing plot points and very little character development. I did have high expectations seeing as how this won the Pulitzer for fiction this year… wondering what the criteria was…

I don't usually go for war novels. In fact, I can't think of the last book I read with detailed combat of any of the American wars. It looks like about a third of this book will be that. HOWEVER, the narrator is so intentionally unlikable and honest about his experience, that I don't hate it. He's crude, directionless, and surrounded by idiots. It's an odd way to garner sympathy, but I think it's working.
