Thoroughly enjoying this reread in comparison to the times I was assigned to read it.

I will finish this book one day

“There is more beauty in truth, even if it is a dreadful beauty. The storytellers at the city gate twist life so that it looks sweet to the lazy and the stupid and the weak, and this only strengthens their infirmities and teaches nothing, cures nothing, nor does it let the heart soar.”

"I have the same thing in my brood" said Samuel. "I don't understand it. You'd think with the same training and the same blood they'd be alike, but they're not--not at all."

Tale as old as time - verifying this currently as a mom

“Putting language to something for which you have no language is no easy feat.”

Oh, how Steinbeck can write

This book isn't really what I expected, nor delivering what the title insinuates it to be about. There are some great points, but I wasn't really looking for a memoir, but more solid commentary on what's actually happening in Palestine.

Caravaggio's frustration is extremely relatable decades later. Will personal and societal disillusionment always be a thing?

I’m so invested. This is turning out to be one of my fav historical fictions.
