Could I really spend this much time in one OT book, I thought to myself. Oh yes I can… how much I’ve missed over the years and how full of Christ this book is!

Man this is taking me foreverrrr, but it’s humbling to see the cost people paid to reform absolutely terrible and inhumane working conditions. This sort of history drives me to thanksgiving and helps me to respect those of old!

Europeans are potentially responsible for desolating Indian populations with smallpox and destroying a wealth of culture. Very interesting as he goes into genetics of Indians and susceptibility to disease. This book is highly theoretical, however, as unfortunately there’s not much data to cite. Most citations come from conquistadors and church burial records. Excited to see what’s next!

I simultaneously can’t believe how tragic and crazy this true story is and how wonderfully written this is. I’m in shock.

Some ppl dislike how long Piper’s writing can be, but I really appreciate how he explores ever nuance and word to fully aim at obedience as the Lord intended. Really enjoying this book and it is challenging me for sure!

Oof never thought how “people pleasing” diminishes our love.
“Jesus is modeling for us in his life the objectivity of love. It has real motives and real actions. And when they are loving, the response of the loved one does not change that fact.”

A little slow getting through this, but this man’s knowledge of Scripture is amazing. In a world today where people make black and white conclusions— Edwards explores every single nuance of every claim he makes. Amazing.

“If you cannot make yourself as you would like to be, how can you expect to have another person entirely to your liking? We would willingly have others be perfect, and yet we fail to correct our own faults... Other peoples far ranging freedom annoys us, and yet we insist on having our own way… it is evident how rarely we think of our neighbor !”

Ouch!

A translated Latin devotional that should be read with caution and theological conviction yet appreciation. A gem from today:

“If you want to learn something that will really help you, learn to see yourself as God sees you and not as you see yourself in the distorted mirror of your own self-importance”

Super dense and academic but I’m reaping wonderful insights. If you read the intros and articles in an ESV study Bible, they’ve done the hard work for what this book teaches.

Found this at a thrift store and Eugene Peterson slapped his name of approval on it— good enough for me. I thought it would be practical to pair this with the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (which my C-Group is reading).

I may run out of ink, and I’m only two chapters in. This book is written right when enlightenment thinking was taking off, namely, that God could be discovered through reason, therefore taking precedence over Scripture. This book systematically counters that as he asserts Scripture and most importantly Jesus IS the most clear revelation we have of God, despite our preconceived notions of logic.

Just read Martin Luther’s story. It’s so interesting the Roman Catholic concept of the holy pope is built off the the verse where Jesus says “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,” even though Peter says we are all living stones. The popes used the death of Ananias in Acts to justify killing anyone who disagreed with their teachings. Thank God for Luther’s courage and convictions!
