As a lifelong, fifth generation Kansan, I’m struggling with the way the locals are being depicted. They’re one dimensional stereotypes. Although I’ve lived most of my adult life in a progressive, affirming community, I grew up in a very small town in the 80s. It wasn’t easy to be queer. In fact, I was in denial about my sexuality until my mid-40s. But I know these people, and the author clearly doesn’t.
