Rin’s rage, hunger for power all throughout, the concepts of individualism vs collectivism, social commentary of discrimination and class differences, poor vs wealth, colorism… this book is amazing. I’ve seen so many parallels to the real world, regardless of the fantasy genre! Love it so far, love Rin, love the lore and worldbuilding.

pg 22- on another note, reading this after crime and punishment it’s an intriguing explanation of why a murderer murders. why does a man assassinate, act from their passions, rather than conforming to the scientific tellings of privileges and advantages they already have? “independence”

passion overtakes reason
“man is stupid” for this acting against their own interest regardless of the advantages societal/political laws dictate they possess

when reading the beginning of this, i feel a sense of absurdity — the protagonist is insecure, cynical, mean, the embodiment of hate is what it seems. a few parts made me chuckle just of the blunt descriptions like feeling intense enjoyment when succeeding to make someone unhappy or “I tell you solemnly, that I have many times tried to become an insect.”

His notes are pessimistic and problematic
