This book has taken me a century to listen to and I think I’m finally ready to give up on the audio and read it on KU instead. I just don’t enjoy the sing-song voice of the narrator.

I stayed up until 1 am reading. It’s a bit like watching someone play a video game. It’s still really funny and fun and for me, a bit too violent. But the world and political landscape is becoming more and more complex and I absolutely love it.

The first 6 chapters I was really unsure. It’s easy and fun but I wasn’t sure Carl was a character I could really care about enough to hold me for 400+ pages. But in chapter 7 — a new voice joins the story and guys, I am so here for it. It’s not like, amazing literature yet but it’s extremely fun and funny.

So far this has been an easy read and the story set up has been a scarily accurate portrayal of what it’s like to “date” a certain type of guy and it’s making me cringe.

The tension builds with each chapter and it feels like everything is about to blow and of course I have to go to bed 🫠

It’s really different from her last series. If you want more of One Dark Window, this might be disappointing.

This slow read might be too slow for me. My Substack guy has us reading one of the 12 parts a month. I would do better with a chapter a day I don’t think there are enough chapters to do that have it be a full year read. Probably I’ll end up doing my own thing.

Rereading but it’s been ages. Chapter one was a quite a boring intro to our vain narrator and Heathcliff. I was wondering what it could have been that I liked about this book.

Chapter 2 we see there is more to the story and chapter 3 is where I remembered why this novel is a classic. I had a hard time putting it down to go to bed.

I’m doing a slow read of this over 2026 with a guy on substack. I’m nervous because I have an edition from 1950 so it’s not going to be as easy to read as other translations. I was going to do a slow read of Anna Karenina or War and Peace this year but tackling Russian lit with a group/guide seems like the way to go.

If you are dismissing this as fan fic you are seriously missing out. The magic system was hard for me to understand and first but eventually you get it. I’m at the point where I where I’m reading slow because I don’t want it to end.
