Oh to be a stone! To feel no grief!

Human misery must somewhere have a stop:
there is no wind that always blows a storm;
great good fortune comes to failure in the end.
All is change; all yields its place and goes;
to persevere, trusting in what hopes he has,
is courage in a man. The coward despairs.

I tell you the worse currency
That ever grew among mankind is money. This
sacks cities, this drives people from their homes,
this teaches and corrupts the minds of the loyal
to acts of shame. This displays
all kinds of evil for the use of men,
Instructs in the knowledge of every impious act.

Not to born is best of all;
When life is there, the second best
To go hence where you came,
with the best speed you may.

Count no mortal happy till he has passed the final limit of his life secure from pain.

Whatsoever escapes the night at last the light of day revisits.

I mean those of you who belong to the peers - study how to steal anything that is forbidden by law. And, so that you may become expert thieves and try to get away with what you steal, it is laid down by law that you get a beating if you are caught stealing. Here then is an excellent opportunity for you to give an exhibition of the way in which you were brought up.
