Irving has such a knack for writing the family; every dynamic is so complex, every chapter has a punchline and recall to earlier moments; it’s all so complicated but easy to see. Many times I’ve found myself wishing I was also part of a large family, until the Schlagobers & Blood chapter, which convinced me I am okay being an only child—that I’m okay not being a Berry.

this book is so very strange in some of the most enjoyable possible ways. i am not looking forward to finishing it, but i am looking forward to reading more John Irving

this is seriously sweet and nostalgic; the way Irving depicts the complexities of family while keeping it funny and entertaining is impressive. Every chapter is so well-constructed and planned; he is so very clever. this book is completely serious, while remaining unapologetically unserious and humorous.

is this the most fun, sweet, nostalgic, and funny book of all time?
