re-started, hoping to actually make some progress! also: THERE BE DRAGONS! mwahahahaha

I read The City Born Great and The Storyteller's Replacement, and loved both stories. Now that I've finally read the City Born Great, I really cannot wait to read The City We Became!

Reading this for book group means I'm looking up more of the work featured by the artists profiled in this book and they are A M A Z I N G. The Jealous Curator blog & podcast are perfect companions to this book. Rebecca Louise Law, Gunjan Aylawadi and Catherine Graffam are easily new fave artists--looking forward to falling for more of these artists!

I am just a few stories into this and I'm already convinced this is going to be a book I MUST HAVE on my shelf. The art is delightful and the summaries of these brazen ladies combines humor and history in a very compelling way, and makes me want to know more about all of them!

I really wish this book was as exciting as it seemed it might be. The further I read, the less into it I get. And it's not just because I expect it to be so-- I'm quite open to being wrong about certain impressions. Unfortunately, I've also recent read Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and Beauty Queens recently, and this book is not even remotely holding up to those books....

The further I get into this book, the further away the promise the title holds goes away. I'm at a section right now that feels very teen movie "she's all that", where a magic makeover on the horizon has the potential to make the main character relatable and reveal all her hidden beauty. these are definitely not my favorite tropes. but! we'll see where it all goes.

*technically I'm a little farther as I started reading it on audiobook while in transit, but I'm not sure what page # that translates to. The fun of trying to read one thing in multiple formats. Also: this book is a Must Read for a reason. ♥

I ♥ Nahri as a character, and would prob'ly follow her to the moon and back....

Ooof. Found this at the county library while shelving, and immediately got super excited because OMFG Molly Ostertag! ♥ This is not the lightest read on the face of the planet, but it's super compelling, and the journey these characters are on promises to be one where strength is tested and it's gonna get worse before it gets better. But I'm ready for this.

omg this book! It's so delightfully spooky!

I started reading this instead of my book group book and can't stop reading this. There are points in the narrative where I do have to stop for a few moments just to remember to breather, because of how tense and brilliant this book is. so gooooood

"Sometimes, when one is moving silently through such an utterly desolate landscape, an overwhelming hallucination can make one feel that oneself, as an individual human being, is slowly coming unraveled. The surrounding space is so vast that it becomes increasingly difficult to keep a balanced grip on one's own being." .....daaaaaaaaammmmn. A reminder that when used correctly, words can be very powerful.

"Pessimistic. It means looking only at the dark side of things." "Pessimistic...pessimistic..." She repeated the English to herself over and over, and then she looked up at me with a fierce glare. "I'm only sixteen," she said, "and I don't know much about the world, but I do know one thing for sure. If I'm pessimistic, then the adults in this world who are not pessimistic are a bunch of idiots."

ohmigod I cannot stop giggling. this is quite marvelous

I am definitely enjoying this book more than I expected. it is fun and thoroughly quirky...I look forward to seeing how this fantatical mystery wraps up

So far...this is one of the most beautiful books I have read in a while. David Wesley Williams' prose is lyrical and it's easy to get lost in the story of this fascinating character and his family history.

I want to take the main character and throw her across the room. there are ways to combine prose and rock-n-roll well. this book does not make it work.
