Christine is 50% done with The Stress of Her Regard
When I first read this in the 1990's, this book was so different and interesting that I gave it 5 stars. I don't know if the difference is that I am listening to the audio version now or if my tastes have changed, but it just seems weird to me. Not bad, but often incomprehensible. Why things are happening is as much a mystery to the reader/listener as to the characters in it.

I made it about 50% through the audio book. I still greatly enjoying it. I agree with some reviewers who stated that the secondary characters are sometimes more interesting than the main characters. That doesn't bother me, because the world she built feels more alive for having colorful and interesting secondary characters.

I made it about 25% through the audio book. I am greatly enjoying it. Some of the heroines speeches are well spoken by the narrator Kate Reading. I rewound certain passages a couple of times to listen to them again.

I am really looking forward to listening to this book while commuting. It has mixed reviews, so I will take that into consideration. I do, however, love the narrator, Kate Reading. Sometimes and excellent narrator can save a so-so book. So far so good!

I do not like the heroine, and since it is first person, it is becoming difficult to finish. She seems prejudiced, a little hypocritical, and a bit cold-hearted. For example, she's highly offended that the tigers are slaves, then at one point she banters with him and calls him a "slave boy." I can understand a crisis of conscience, but I felt it was too soon for her to joke about it.

I'm about 42% through the book. I find the writing confusing and inconsistent. The author is obviously trying to make the writing feel atmospheric, however some word choices seem to be wrong. The hero's motivations are not clear, and the herione runs hot & cold. I can understand not wanting to want to have sex with someone, but her attitude toward him for it was extreme and rather unfair.
