Somehow, despite this series changing my life when I was a teenager, I don’t think I ever read volume 1 because I couldn’t get it at the library. But I’m an adult now and bought the 25th anniversary edition with my adult money, so here we are again, overdue for a return

I am deeply fascinated by how R.F. Kuang toes the line between commercial and literary, as well as creative and scholarly writing. The line-level structuring is so precise and well balanced in this. She obviously studied a lot for the content of this book, but she studied for style too. She’s a chameleon of style and it’s so interesting how different her books sound from each other. Basically I’m fascinated
