It’s fine, it’s not bad by any means, I was just told this was a horror novel and it’s very clearly a murder mystery.

I just read a third of this book in one sitting it’s really hard to put down.

I’m beginning to feel like the chapters with meaningful social commentary are kind of just scattered in between chapters that are essentially just movies/book/TV show reviews. Which is a big fucking bummer because the chapters with meaningful social commentary are really fucking powerful.

The chapter “how we all lose” is really good and is the first chapter. I’ve read in the book so far that I feel aligned with her prologue.

That was an insanely long chapter about Scrabble.

I feel like it’s probably not a good sign that this book is only 10 years old and I’m only one chapter in and I’m already thinking that it’s aged poorly, but Roxanne Gay is funny and has an interesting perspective on a lot of of media that I’m currently consuming.

I can’t put this down because of the Girl, Interrupted of it all.

The chapter titled “death wish” where she dissect and criticizes dark comedy is really really good. She says a lot of things that I’ve always thought about joking about things that are traumatic and real life experiences that people have every day that I’ve never been able to put into words. I love this woman.

Oh wait this is actually crazy though. It’s crazy that Napoleon just released his hounds onto everyone and then they all started letting him be a dictator suddenly. I get it I get it. It’s an allegory for Stalinism.

This book is so goddamn goofy. Oh “snowball and Napoleon got in a disagreement because snowball thought the animals should learn how to use firearms and Napoleon thought the animals should use their resources to send out more messenger pigeons”. Like I know that it’s an allegory but it’s just so fucking funny.

This is actually becoming kind of hard to finish, but I don’t want to mark as DNF because I’m stubborn and want to believe that just because things are not good does not mean that they cannot be enjoyable or vice versa.

OK, I’m loving the way. This is written, but I’m no longer loving the story or the main character. I started out empathizing with her because it’s easy to empathize with someone having an identity crisis, but as the book goes on, she just reveals herself as more and more narcissistic. Especially the part I’m at right now where she’s obsessing over getting her 45-year-old body in shape for a man.

This is fucking great where is it going? What is she going to do and discover? I need to know FUCK.

This book is fucking crazy because it starts out as a sci-fi book and then it becomes a horror novel with spirits and hauntings.

Something I really like about this book is there aren’t really super big time skips between the chapters. The author is really taking you through each hour and each day of the main character’s life, including her every thought and every interaction with her husband and boyfriend.

This is a long one but holy shit I can’t stop reading it.

I am once again reading an insane book by this insane man.

Okay so as a homework assignment to myself and to better contextualize the book I’m reading, I watched fight club for the first time last night and it seems like Mr. Palahniuk has a vibe. He sets the stage for the first quarter of the story, then spend the next quarter of the story describing sexually grotesque or violent scenes that make the story fucked up, then it goes back to normal then it goes off the rails.

This book is so fucking weird.

What the fuck

I keep oscillating on this. ER is a great writer and she’s super smart, but I find her conclusions to be contradicting frequently. The main one that bothers me is that money and beauty are power to her, but she doesn’t want to be known for being rich or beautiful, even though this is what she aspires to be bc it makes her feel in control? I relate to a lot of her experiences nevertheless, especially with men.

I’m reading 3 books rn because that’s how my brain works but this is one of the best things I’ve read in a long time. The reviews were mostly positive (because ER is a brilliant person and a skilled writer) but with some criticism of her perspective being narrow because she’s traditionally gorgeous but I’ve found that every essay so far is extremely relatable as another traditionally beautiful woman.

Okay, so the story is really good and interesting and well paced, I can’t put it down, but I kinda feel like it’s written at a 6th grade reading level and it’s making me feel like I’m reading a YA novel.

This is the best book I have ever read in my life and it has fueled an obsession with the author and the monster that will last the rest of my days.

First of all she was only 18 when she wrote this book, second of all I have never read a book so fast. I started this like 2 days ago. Third of all this is so fucking sad I feel so bad for the monster HE DIDNT ASK FOR THIS.

This picks up really quickly. I didn’t think the “this guy is nuts” theme would be so in-your-face. I also didn’t realize that it was written as a series of letters.

Everyone I’ve told so far that I’m reading this book has responded with “you haven’t read Frankenstein yet???” LEAVE ME ALONE
