So many complicated thoughts, but I'm glad this book was written.

This is the best book I've read in 2024 so far. From the opening pages with the humorous extract from the school newspaper, I knew I'd love it. What a pleasure to get to know Elly and Gaunt in their safe schoolboy existence. So much humanity in the portrayals as they and their friends are led into a horrible war that makes their boyhood fears ridiculous. Excellently crafted and with brilliant characters. Sublime.
