i’ve reached the point where he shifts from direct address (reader) to addressing ken and it genuinely hit so hard i had to put my bookmark in and look away. like i don’t know if it’s still ok for me to be in the room. this is crazy

lately i read everything as a desire to be seen and to be known. for this reason, milena’s role as kafka’s translator makes me feel insane. i’m 30 pages in and already the yearning is so thick and the people so inhibited that i know this is going to be an all timer for me. im happy that milena knew kafka so that i could read this and feel known in return.

i keep catching myself hoping for secret yuri. which is completely unreasonable obviously

i’m having a great time. got to the london part. feeling wistful. miss u iris and michele and lauren and even ali raza what the hell him too in case he ever sees this

somewhat dense and i’m annotating lots so it’s taking me forever to get through this but i’m enjoying the ride. hit a really heart wrenching part though and started to integrate breaks while reading just because it’s gotten pretty heavy.

just started this one! was thrilled to find this at the (somewhat) local library (it’s a 10 min drive and i have no car) as i’ve been wanting to read this pretty bad recently! just because my class made me interested in thinking about the marked flâneur and i like thinking about cities in general. and lately i like walking. #yup

as a general rule i love thinking about language and personal desire and am probably going to like things that handle these themes and/or the intersection between these themes. as such, i am having a great time with the book of salt. on a separate note i don’t think i can overstate just how aptly titled this book is

im so lost actually. seems too prose-y for the subject matter sometimes. idk friends this is one where i'll have to figure it out by going to class and being a sponge and soaking up my classmates' and prof's thoughts

i already want to give this book 5 stars. i love jumping the gun more than anything but it is so so so good so far. i am a big enjoyer of anti plot novels and of thinking about the false intimacy of urban living (intense proximity/abject solitude). i love thinking about interiority and permeability and palimpsests. incredible bits of language. eating it up.

i am so excited

i’m very thoroughly delighted by this book so far. it’s very charming and has some excellent, exceedingly fun bits of language. i do think i am the target audience for this book given my propensity for time travel, espionage, slow-burn romances, quips, the occasional bout of random and directionless homosexual attraction, and being struck by my complicity/victimhood in my racialization. i hope the rest delivers.

this is so gay

i am in love with dangarembga’s prose. she is so good at drawing on a universal and ancestral type of anger associated with being a girl or a woman, but also very skillfully illustrates the hyper-rationalization we (i use “we” nebulously, i mean the narrator, but also myself, but also women, but also am hesitant to make so sweeping an assertion) must undergo constantly to continue on living.
