A passage I enjoyed on page 245

“Holsten’s people had thought themselves lucky that someone had built such a convenient flight of steps back to civilization. They had never quite come to the realization that those steps led only to that one place.”

The narrative speeds along. I’m still surprised by some of the events the author omits. For example, Chernobyl isn’t mentioned at all even though Gorbachev believed that moment initiated the fall of the Soviet Union. That seems important to me because it highlights many of the issues with soviet-style communism (e.g. bureaucracy) and is significant in a story where communism is a main character.
