One of my more practical New Years resolutions is to read both when I'm going to sleep and right when I wake up to keep me off my phone!

I care a lot more about the characters and their stories this time which makes my problems with the email interludes SO much more frustrating actually

Already more tolerable to 22 year old me but the structure still doesn't hit with me, makes for a tricky reading experience (for me), switching constantly between complex sociological essay type paragraphs that don't feel necessarily tailored to the characters 'writing them' (as opposed to feeling like a vessel for Rooney) and then back to very classic-rooney mundane (non-derogatory) stream of consciousness writing.

I love natural imagery in poems and prose and it's really interesting just how twisted and disgusted Plath is by nature and its almost primordial chaos ('Spinster' in particular).

'Maudlin' is my favourite so far. Significantly shorter but so rich in her very interior thoughts on violent femininity and menstruation and pain.

re-reading because this book came up in the Inklings i read on female friendship last week, and I read this book when i was a preteen - would honestly describe it as a cross between a sally rooney novel and one day… so think it will be considerably more effective for me as a 22 year old. very excited :)) beautiful visual first chapter !!!

William Goldman sells the autobiographical intro of this book so well. Had me googling his Wikipedia page. Consider me gagged upon learning he never had a wife named Helen or any sons, let alone a son named Jason….

slow-ish start (in typical sally rooney fashion, I significantly prefer one character/storyline over the other - though that’s already gotten a little bit better as we go through) but this is already my favourite work of hers by far
